1944 M4-A3 SHERMAN TANK – Thunderbolt
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! Come hear the roar of a powerful engine and the clank of tracks as the Allen County Historical Society’s 1944 M4-A3 Sherman Tank stops at the Park once again this year. The tank, Thunderbolt, is one of the most completely restored tanks of its kind in existence. Acquired by the Allen County Historical Society in 1957, the tank was displayed outside the Allen County Museum until 1987 when volunteers from Lima’s Joint Systems Manufacturing Center, (maker of the modern M1 Abrams Tank), and the Lima Ford Engine Plant, completely restored the Sherman to mint running condition including a completely reconditioned “spare” engine. Since then, volunteers from The Joint Systems Manufacturing Center and Husky Lima Refinery maintain an important piece of history while honoring veterans and supporting the Allen County Museum.
“Thunderbolt” will be on display from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Veterans’ Car Show & Cruise-In as well as leading the Veterans’ Parade & Cruise-Out at 6:00 p.m.
